Long Beach Press-Telegram - Local kid hitting it big
He's the youngest castaway in "Lost," ABC's hit television drama about airplane survivors forced to live on an island far away from civilization. But before he got "Lost," 12-year-old Bellflower resident Malcolm David Kelley could be found in numerous roles on both the large and small screens, from parts on "Judging Amy" and "Malcolm in the Middle," to playing young Antwone in "Antwone Fisher," a film directed by Denzel Washington. "In the 11-to-13 age range, he's 'The Kid,"‚" said his manager, Nelson Parks of ESI Network. "When something comes up, his name comes up in the conversation." An actor since he was 5, Malcolm's first appearance was on a McDonald's commercial. He lent his voice for a Nickelodeon cartoon, "Fatherhood." He was featured in a Snoop Dogg music video and played "Lil Saint," a young rapper in the movie, "You Got Served." He auditioned three or four times for "Lost" before getting the part of Walt, a young boy trying to grow accustomed to a father he never really knew while dealing with being stranded among strangers.... Backstage.com - The Young and the Restless
When it comes to acting nominations, sitcom stalwart Everybody Loves Raymond seems a shoo-in these days: Several cast members have collections of statues cluttering their respective mantles, and each of the major players has been nominated more than once. In its early days, however, Raymond was barely recognized; it wasn't until the show's third season that it started receiving major nominations for acting. At first glance this may seem a case of the performances developing over time until they're ready to be recognized in the big leagues. The truth is, the acting on CBS' Raymond and many other current awards-show favorites were solid from the get-go; sometimes it just takes a little longer for awards voters to catch on. After all, plenty of actors on established shows are still turning in top-notch performances. Adding to the challenge of being an actor on a new series in a competitive field: The Screen Actors Guild Awards and the Golden Globes nominate performances based on a calendar year's worth of work, rather than on a complete television season, which typically runs from September through May of the next year. This means actors are judged for the end of one television season and the beginning of another. Actors on shows that debut in the fall have only a few months to impress voters, and sometimes that's not enough. The Emmy nominations are based on a full television season, but sometimes it still takes a bit longer for a performance to land that elusive nomination.... ...While a number of factors are at work here--timing, categories already crowded with high-profile performances--it would be a shame if this year's crop of newbies were overlooked. Several freshman series boast some of the best, most involving performances of the year.... ...Another innovative new drama, Lost, has garnered top ratings and plenty of attention for its twisty, mystery-laden plot, but the series also serves as a showcase for its excellent ensemble cast. The show focuses on a diverse group of plane-crash survivors marooned on a desolate island, each with a fascinating personal back story. As recovering junkie rock star Charlie, Lord of the Rings hobbit Dominic Monaghan is note-perfect; the actor skillfully hints at Charlie's darker depths without sacrificing the character's natural charm. Equally impressive is Naveen Andrews as Sayid, a former member of the Iraqi Republican Guard; the actor captures the character's psychological torment with compelling grace. But perhaps the two most astounding performances on the show are from an actor who hasn't even had much in the way of dialogue yet and a respected character performer who's finally getting his day in the sun. Yunjin Kim's Sun, like many of the other characters, was a cipher when the series first started--all we knew was that she is a seemingly submissive Korean wife. Still, Kim made her instantly likeable. Further revelations have come via pre-crash flashbacks, in which we see Sun attempting to leave controlling husband Jin (Daniel Dae Kim). Kim hardly has any lines in this particular scene, but every possible emotion is etched on her face in the space of only a few minutes: sadness, longing, hope. In the eyes of TV viewers, this was the moment that marked Kim as an actor to watch. Rounding out this quartet of standout performances is veteran character actor Terry O'Quinn's turn as would-be adventurer Locke, a man with a tragic past who seems to have adapted to life on the island with a little too much ease. In previous TV roles, O'Quinn has often been the charismatic guy scuttling around in the background; you know he's fascinating, you just don't know why. Here the actor has a meaty, possibly career-defining role that just keeps getting better. As far as getting recognized with nominations, Lost's chances are better than Veronica's: It's one of the most water-cooler discussion-worthy shows of the season. Still, given that it's an ensemble show with a buzz-generating setup and no Jennifer Garner-style breakout stars--at least not yet--Lost is more likely to get recognized in the Best Drama and writing categories; its deserving actors may have to wait another season.... USA Today - And the honorees are...
First, let me tell you who didn't rank as my top 100 people of 2004: Ashlee Simpson, Paris Hilton, Jude Law and the cast of Ocean's Twelve. Confused? Each year, when compiling this humongous column, I ask myself which pop-culture figures affected me the most during the past 12 months. Not tabloid magazine sales — just little, entertainment-lovin' me. Hopefully, this list will both ring true (I know I'm not the only one who loved that Loretta Lynn record!) and turn you on to some stuff you missed: 30. Naveen Andrews. I don't have a problem with all these articles about Evangeline Lilly being the breakout star of Lost— I just kindly disagree. I find Andrews, who plays tortured and complex Sayid, by far the most compelling character. Let's hope he makes out of this season alive. 22. Matthew Fox. There's something about this former Party of Five actor that makes me root for him, no matter what insane situation he's in. On Lost, that's a quality too important to be overlooked. Without him, it might not be my favorite new show on the tube.... Read the full story here.(11:20 AM)

Tuesday, December 28, 2004 New York Post - Filling Out the 'Lost' Fat Kid
Despite all the beautiful people trapped on the mysterious island on ABC's hit drama, "Lost," fans are increasingly obsessed with the back story of the lovable fat kid, Hurley. But they're probably going to be forced to wait until the end of the season to find out who he really is. Web sites like Ain't It Cool News — typically a very reliable place for inside information about movies and TV shows — report that viewers probably won't learn Hurley's past until the end of the season. Even Jorge Garcia, the actor who plays Hurley, doesn't know for sure, but thinks it could be as early as February. Speculation on the 'Net about Hurley's past has ranged from him being a Dungeons & Dragons role-playing gamer to a deadly saboteur. A cryptic remark he made, "Back home, I'm a warrior myself," has kept fans guessing.... Read the full story here.(4:42 PM)
South Bend Tribune - 'Lost' actor flies under the radar
William Mapother just returned last week from Hawaii, where he has been shooting some pivotal episodes of the breakout ABC series "Lost," and Christmas was on his mind. Between the balmy island temperatures of paradise and his home base in Los Angeles, he said he is looking forward to a nice, quiet holiday break in his native Kentucky. The air may be chilly, but after weeks in tropical heaven, a little snow would be downright festive right now. Will it be difficult to get into the spirit of the season after polishing off his perfectly villainous turn as the antagonist on an island of castaways? Not for one second. "If anything, it will make me appreciate it even more," he said with an easy laugh. He has rounded out the casts in a myriad of high-budget ("Mission: Impossible 2", "Swordfish," "Minority Report") and critically acclaimed films ("In the Bedroom" and "Born on the Fourth of July"), but Mapother, a 1987 University of Notre Dame graduate, can still typically go grocery shopping without much ado. Not even guest appearances on some of television's most watched shows, including "CSI: Miami" and "Law & Order," have helped him move onto the average American's entertainment radar. His role as Ethan, a plane-crash survivor (whose name wasn't on the plane's manifest) and general troublemaker on "Lost" may just change that once and for all.... Read the full story here.(5:55 AM)
USA Today - The good, the bad and the 'Swan' ugly
Suddenly, the state of scripted television looks a lot less desperate. All it took to banish a few years' worth of TV despair was the arrival of two big hits, Desperate Housewives and Lost. Now the attention is back on what TV has always done best: create characters and tell extended stories.... The Best: 1. Lost (ABC) How do you stretch a plane-crash castaway story into a weekly series? You do it by structuring the show so that the compelling mystery isn't where these people are but who they are. And so, under the guidance of Alias' supremely creative J.J. Abrams, Lost offers the intense pleasures of two shows in one: an exciting, grand-scale adventure married to a smart, intimate drama. Each week, 48 people face the trauma of forming a new society and each week, a happily committed fan cult joyfully gets lost in their stories.... Read the full story here.(5:51 AM)

Friday, December 17, 2004 Reuters - 'Lost' Premiere Rerun Pushes ABC to Top Wednesday
ABC stayed on top of Wednesday's primetime pack in the adults 18-49 demographic with a repeat of the two-hour pilot of "Lost." The drama thriller about 48 survivors of a plane crash stranded on a deserted island won its 8-10 p.m. time slot in the key demo even against first-run competition on the other Big Four networks. "Lost" finished out with an average of 11.6 million viewers and 4.3 rating/12 share in the demo, according to preliminary estimates from Nielsen Media Research.... Read the full story here.(3:42 AM)
Tennessean.com - Matthew Fox is glad to get 'Lost' in Hawaii
Ah, paradise. That was Matthew Fox's reaction when he discovered that Lost, his compelling new castaways series on ABC, would be shot entirely in Hawaii. Then came the pilot. "The first day, we shot the jungle scene where Jack, Kate and Charlie are running from the Big It," says the actor who plays heroic surgeon Jack Sheppard. The Big It is the ferocious, tree-shaking behemoth, as yet unseen, that is stalking him and other survivors of a plane crash on a deserted tropical island. "We were freezing and they were dousing us with fire hoses to thicken the rain. The three of us were up to our shins in mud, shivering. I remember thinking, 'This is the furthest thing from what I assumed shooting in Hawaii would be like.'" At this point, Fox, 38, has come to expect the unexpected from the hit series. Each week, the scripts introduce new shockers about the characters (Sayid served in Saddam Hussein's Republican Guard in Tikrit?) and about the island (how many South Pacific atolls have polar bears roaming around?). Even Lost's success — it trails only Desperate Housewives as the season's highest-rated new show, averaging more than 17 million viewers — is something of a surprise, considering that its creators, J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof, went against most of the current network beliefs about what audiences want.... Read the full story here.(3:37 AM)
MSNBC - TV in 2004 was 'Lost' and 'Desperate'
BESTS. Here's just one example of why ABC's plane-crash drama, "Lost," is so fascinating. On a recent episode, fan favorite Hurley decided to take a census of the crash survivors, using the passenger manifest from the flight. It seemed like an amiable plot device until he discovered that one of the mysterious passengers was never on the manifest to begin with. Who was he? Where did he come from? Why was he there? It's a version of the famous shortest horror story in the world: "The last man in the world sat in a room. There came a knock on the door." Yet "Lost" pulls these kind of spine-tinglers out of the air every single week. I'd read a rumor that each "Lost" writer drew three character names out of a hat and wrote complicated backstories for them without consulting the others. If true, that's a fabulous example of a writing-class exercise taken from the classroom to the small screen, with intriguing results.... Read the full story here.(3:32 AM)
Zap2It - TV Gal Awards Best in Show
I want you to know I agonize over this list as if it really matters. I fret whether "The O.C." will stop talking to me if they don't crack the Top 10. And, if they do, who will I celebrate Chrismakkuh with? Will "Alias" and I be in a fight? Will "24" bring back Kim to spite me? So I've made my list, I've checked it twice Well, actually thrice. Okay, truth be told, I've checked my list about 20 times. Good thing I'm not Santa or kids wouldn't get their presents until sometime around March. Here are my picks for the 10 best prime time shows on network television. Cable shows don't have to play by the same rules so they will get their own separate list and I only picked from shows that are still currently on the air (what's the point of recommending a show you can't watch anymore, why torture you?).... 3. "Lost": Well, we needed a good old fashion mystery filled with cryptic clues, rabid fan theories, and fearless story telling. Once again executive producer J.J. Abrams has created an unbelievable yet believable world and invited viewers in to take part in the roller coaster adventure.... Read the full story here.(3:28 AM)
Honolulu Star-Bulletin - The Ladies of 'Lost'
Evangeline Lilly has a warning to a boy from her Kailua neighborhood who occasionally collects souvenirs from her clothesline. "I don't know who he is or if he knows who I am, but when I catch him, I'll beat the living stink out of the kid," promises the star of ABC's hit series "Lost." "I love fun, funky intimate garments, and I have a lot of them, or had," Lilly said during a break in a fashion shoot for US Weekly at the Kahala Mandarin Oriental Hotel. "I don't have a dryer, so I hang all my clothes outside to dry." While Lilly was working, a girlfriend of hers from Vancouver, B.C., saw the lad "stealing my underwear off the clothesline." "He'd better return everything or I'll tell his parents. And if they're on eBay, he's going to have to buy them back!" Like Lilly, who plays Kate on "Lost," her castaway co-star actresses -- Yunjin Kim (Sun), Emilie de Ravin (Claire) and Maggie Grace (Shannon) -- said they felt like survivors upon arriving in Hawaii.... Honolulu Star-Bulletin - Actresses plan to glam it up for the holidays
It's getting to look and feel a lot like Christmas for everyone, including the "castaways" of ABC's hit series "Lost." Thursday, December 16, 2004 Zap2It TV Ratings - 'CSI: NY' Paves Way to Wednesday Win for CBS
...ABC notched a victory in the adults 18-49 demographic with a 4.1 rating. CBS was second with a 3.6, followed closely by NBC at 3.4. FOX averaged 2.9, UPN 2.1 and The WB 1.2. ABC's repeat of "Lost" -- the first in its regular timeslot -- held up fairly well, winning the 8 p.m. hour with a 7.8/13. CBS was second with "60 Minutes," 5.8/9. NBC repeated "The Seinfeld Story" and finished third. The finale of "America's Next Top Model" drew a 4.3/7 for UPN, beating the combination of "That '70s Show," 3.8/6, and "Quintuplets," 3.2/5, on FOX. The WB went with a "Smallville" rerun. "The West Wing," 8.3/13, gave NBC the lead at 9 p.m. A second hour of "Lost" averaged 7.1/11 for ABC. CBS dropped to third with "The King of Queens," 7.1/11, and "Center of the Universe," 6.3/10. "Nanny 911," 4.7/7, moved FOX into fourth. UPN's "Kevin Hill" was fifth. The premiere of "Big Man on Campus" didn't generate much excitement at The WB, posting only a 1.7/3.... Wednesday, December 08, 2004 New York Daily News - 'Lost' is find of the year
'Desperate Housewives" has more buzz, and more viewers, than any other new show on television. And I love it - but I'm even more in love with another freshman ABC hit, "Lost." Tonight at 8, "Lost" presents its 11th episode, the last before ABC goes into a mini-rerun cycle for the rest of December. When "Lost" returns in January, it'll be as the lead-in to the two-hour season premiere of "Alias," another taut, unpredictable action drama from J.J. Abrams. If you haven't yet found "Lost," you can jump aboard next Wednesday, when ABC airs the pilot in its original two-hour form. It's one of the most superbly directed, tightly written pilots in years.... Transcontinental Newsnet - Viewers aren't Lost
It wasn't supposed to happen this way. Attention spans were too short, they said. The audience was too jaded. Reality TV was all the rage. Nobody would make much of an effort to find Lost, much less come back each week to keep up with the spine-tingling thrills, hair-raising twists and turns and labyrinthine inventiveness of a complex serial drama with some 40-odd (some very odd) recurring characters, where missing even one episode could leave one feeling, well, lost. Lost, a sprawling ensemble drama about the survivors of a passenger jet crash on a not-so-deserted desert island in the South Seas, was supposed to be the epitome of a critics' darling — good reviews, a tiny but loyal audience and a short shelf life.... ...The strange, emotionally stirring yarn about the survivors of Oceanic Airlines Flight 815 has spawned some 6,110 fans' theories about Lost’s mystery, according to a recent check of www.lost-tv.com, the unofficial forum for the series (what’s the island’s secret? how did they crash? why are things so weird? post your theories and speculation!). The program's followers have established more than 700 of their own poll forums, everything from, "If there was a Lost movie, who gets a nude scene?" and "Who do you think Sayid will hook up with?" to "What will happen to the French woman?" and the hard-to-top "Boone beatings." For all the hype and glory, whether its online chitchat in chat rooms or in the ubiquitous magazine and arts section cover stories, there is one unassailable fact about Lost that gives dedicated TV followers everywhere reason for hope: For once, there is a program out there that is grabbing a mass audience with not just style, but real substance.... USA Today - 'Lost' keeps its bearings in mid-series cliffhanger
What a way to go on Christmas vacation. Trapped on an uncharted isle that's part paradise and part purgatory, the survivors of Oceanic's ill-fated Flight 815 have endured a plane crash, a polar bear, a monster, a madwoman, boars, boredom, cave-ins, fistfights, knifings, divisions, torture, terror and a wild game of golf — and they're only halfway through their first season. Tonight, things go from strange to stranger for TV's most fascinating castaways on a sterling, shock-filled Lost, the show's last original episode this year. (Catch up with reruns through December.) As he has all season, producer J.J. Abrams carefully treads the line between fun and frustration tonight, parceling out just enough information to keep you satisfied while keeping you wanting more. So while a few questions are answered, many more are posed in this mid-season cliffhanger, all the better to ensure your return in January when Lost is paired with Abrams' equally entertaining Alias.... Boston Herald - Holloway finds recognition as bad guy on ABC hit 'Lost'
Recently, Josh Holloway, who plays sexy con man Sawyer on "Lost," got a little emotional. He read the script that featured Sawyer's complicated back story on ABC's hit drama and wanted to express his gratitude to the series' creators. "I remember calling J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof and trying to sound all cool and thank them for the opportunity, but by the end I got choked up on both of them," Holloway said during a recent telephone interview. "I had to hang up. I lost my coolness there." His spontaneous outpouring of emotions is understandable. "Eight years in this town, they've broken me in half so many times," he said. "I find myself in a heap on the floor going, 'You know what? Give up this dream, dude. It's done. They're killing you.' I've gotten so close for so many years on so many things. I've done seven independent movies, so I was doing about a movie a year. I'd just get a taste and just a little encouragement from the universe to continue. It was just enough to keep me in." Now, as part of the surprise success of the season, Holloway is constantly recognized.... Read the full story here.(11:47 AM)
