LOST Parody on Tonight's MADtv

Entertainment Weekly - The Jin Game
Last night's episode was titled ''Lost: . . . In Translation,'' and for the second week in a row, island mysteries took a back seat to character-driven back story, a gambit that certainly runs the risk of alienating fans who initially got hooked on Lost's plethora of puzzles. In fact, yesterday, EW columnist Stephen King (who apparently also writes novels) was quoted as saying he felt the show has been ''stuck in neutral.'' If you asked me two weeks ago, I would have agreed. But in the wake of the recent (and creatively successful) focus on our castaways' pre-island lives, my position is in flux. What's becoming clear is that Lost is not the show many of us assumed it to be — namely, ''the next X-Files.'' Slowly, Lost is revealing itself to be something different — more elusive, more dramatically dynamic, definitely more risky. And all for the better.... Read the full story here.

The Dominion Post - Serious message behind getting Lost
Lost (TV2, Wednesday nights) keeps getting better and better. Sure, at bottom it's becoming one of those typical American Serious Message dramas, with all the weirdness and mystical goings-on turning out to be for A Purpose. It's the same with The 4400, which finished on TV3 last night.
But the schmaltz is kept almost subliminal, and it's the black and nasty and truly perplexing stuff that kicks Lost along so absorbingly.
For anyone who hasn't watched it, it's worth supporting on principle, because it was made as part of a new reactive tide in American television against the reality plague. You can count The 4400 and the gripping 24 series in this new wave. Finally, it occurred to some genius TV producer that, cheap as it was to put a group of real people on a tropical island and engineer silly scraps and challenges, and film their sores and tantrums, it would never be as entertaining and emotionally fulfilling as a properly crafted drama.... Zap2It - Kim Talks About the 'Lost' Art of Being Jin
"I was reading a SAG [Screen Actors Guild] report," says "Lost" star Daniel Dae Kim. "Did you know there were only 61 roles, in all of television, on every network, for Asian-American males [last year]? Sixty-one.
"That's why something like this show is so important, and that's one of the reasons I'm really proud to be part of it."
However many roles there are this year, Kim ("Angel," "24," "The Hulk") has one of them. On the Wednesday-night adventure drama, created by J.J. Abrams ("Alias"), Damon Lindelof ("Crossing Jordan") and Jeffrey Lieber ("Tuck Everlasting"), Kim plays Jin, a Korean man who, together with his wife, Sun (Yunjin Kim), and 40-odd other people, survived a plane crash on a deserted and enigmatic tropical island.... Toronto Star - Lost but not forgotten
Charlie Pace may be lost, but devotees of his band DriveShaft can't let go.
"Happy Birthday Charlie, wherever you are," reads one entry on http://www.driveshaftband.com, a fansite lovingly maintained by Marie Siu and Jilly despite the fact that the drug-addicted bass player has been missing since his plane went down somewhere in the Pacific last September.
Of course, we know where Charlie is. As TV viewers, we see him every week as one of the crash survivors trying to understand the mysteries that make the hit show Lost so, well, mysterious.
But Marie Siu and Jilly, they exist in a different reality. They were born out of the mind of some ABC executive who came up with the brilliant promotional plan to launch a fake fansite for an equally fake band.... Read the full story here.

MSNBC - 'Lost' helps O'Quinn find elusive star turn
As the mysterious Locke on ABC's suspenseful "Lost," Terry O'Quinn glories in his rich role.
Locke, of course, was stranded on a tropical island with dozens of other passengers after their jetliner crashed in the opener. Since then, he has emerged as the series' mystical patriarch, a shamanic presence living his back-to-nature dream after a lifetime spent as a clerical schlub. Or is he just a nut job acting out a long Wild Man Weekend? Or a psycho ready to blow?
Don't ask O'Quinn, who "Lost" viewers first met planted on the beach silently gazing out to sea.... Read the full story here.

USA Today - 'Lost' Island burns with mystery
ABC's Lost (Wednesday, 8 ET/PT) landed on the TV map not only because it was an immediate ratings hit — averaging 16.4 million viewers an episode — but also for its unusual story line and structure.
In the serialized mystery, one question looms over all: Where are they?
That single central structure might seem more appropriate for a novel, in which the author decides when to conclude the story, than for a TV series, whose writers can't control when it ends. But Lost's head writers, co-creator Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, say the structure they, along with co-creator J.J. Abrams, have devised can sustain tension and suspense for however long the series ultimately runs.
The strategy is to plant many mysteries and to turn the focus onto the 40-plus crash survivors of Oceanic Airways Flight 815.... Read the full story here.

USA Today - Network drama pilots ease off the gunplay
Desperate Housewives may meet some Soccer Moms, and plane-crash survivors won't be the only ones Lost on TV next fall.
Both new hits are sparking a renewed interest in cheeky soaps and ambitious, splashy mysteries as new-series hopefuls for next season.
Fans of cop, law and medical dramas needn't despair; the networks are still plotting many of these TV staples. But they're less dominant among the 50-odd drama pilots being filmed over the next few weeks, hoping for spots on the fall schedules that will be announced in mid-May.
Instead, look for more character-based soaps, some with twisty mysteries that keep viewers coming back for more.
Housewives and Lost "are the two obvious shows that people are sort of copying," says Paul Haas of the Endeavor talent agency... Read the full story here.

The Boston Globe - TV characters' names often say something about who they are
...The name game is something the makers of "Lost" have played quite shrewdly. J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof have been deliberate and provocative in their choices, using names that gesture outward from the series. "Every single name on the show has purpose and meaning," Lindelof has said. The most conspicuous is John Locke, a character named after the 17th century philosopher who believed humans are born in a state of "tabula rasa," a phrase meaning "blank slate" that also served as the title of a "Lost" episode. The show's Locke (Terry O'Quinn) was "reborn" after the plane crash and returned to his original, unparalyzed state. Jack (Matthew Fox) is the de facto leader of the island's society, thus his appropriate surname is Shephard - a pun on one who tends to the flock, with a passing nod to space pioneer Alan Shepard. Other "Lost" characters have namesakes redolent of early Americana - Boone, Walt and Sawyer, for example.... Read the full story here.

The Elements - Further Down the Rabbit Hole
'Lost' regular Terry O'Quinn reports things will be getting curiouser and curiouser on the island wonderland the plane crash survivors inhabit on the hit ABC drama.
'The character Boone (Ian Somerhalder) and I have found a hatch in the woods in the jungle - a metal thing with a window,' explains the actor who plays the mysterious Locke on the show. 'In the episode that I'm working on now we're trying to open it.'
O'Quinn says that fans of the popular ABC drama about airplane crash survivors on an island already know that Locke 'was a paraplegic and couldn't walk before the plane crash. He wanted to go on this Australian Walkabout (a journey of self-discovery the Aborigines do), but when he flew there they wouldn't let him because he was confined to a wheelchair. He thought that going there was going to answer his questions and give him his ambulatory powers back and all that stuff, but it didn't happen. Then the plane crashed and he decided that this was, in fact, his destiny. The back story that we're shooting now predates all that stuff. This Locke back story and the opening of the hatch are interrelated. His coming to the island and his faith in the island as a deity or entity is tied into his remembering something from his past -- and it all ties together in a weird, wonderful kind of way.' Sioux City Journal - Music may keep television shows off DVD
...Now, producers say, they're aware of the needs of DVD distributors. Like Thompson, the producers of "Lost" aren't wasting a minute.
"With 'Lost' we started pretty much as soon as (the ABC president) gave the green light to the show," says Naylor. "We started shooting material for the DVD before a frame was shot. We've got production meetings...close to 100 tapes of the creation of the show." Read the full story here.

Calgary Sun - Sex symbol found in Lost
Sometimes it's good to be Lost. Just ask Naveen Andrews, who plays Sayid, the former Iraqi intelligence officer who is stranded with the other crash survivors on the hit ABC-TV series Lost.

Anchorage Daily News - Humpy's T-shirt is part of character's wardrobe on 'Lost'
Like most matters on the treacherous tropical island of ABC's "Lost," the tale of how a Humpy's Great Alaskan Alehouse logo T-shirt arrived on the torso of one of the show's main characters was clouded in mystery.
At least it was a complete mystery to Humpy's manager Cyndi Ramirez. Ramirez said she didn't even know what "Lost" was until she started receiving e-mails and phone calls earlier this winter from folks who noticed a Humpy's shirt on the show.
"I thought those people were crazy, but I kept hearing it and hearing it," Ramirez said during a break following a weekday lunch rush.... Read the full story here.

The Courier-Journal - 'Lost' gets found
"Lost," at 8 p.m. Wednesdays, has become a solid, top-10 Nielsen ratings hit for ABC.
The drama, about survivors of a plane crash on a deserted island, is drawing about 16 million viewers weekly. Not bad for a Johnny-come-lately entry that arose from what the producer told The New York Times was a half-baked suggestion.
J.J. Abrams, who came up with "Lost," admits the series was inspired by the idea of creating a fictional drama around the idea behind CBS' "Survivor." He thought of it as "X-Files" meets "Gilligan's Island," only with a huge cast and taped not in a studio but in the Hawaiian Islands.
Still, you have to wonder why creators included a menacing polar bear as a villain on a tropical island.... Read the full story here.

The Modesto Bee - 'Lost' is losing some fans with its complex stories
Is "Lost" leading viewers on a wild goose chase?
Diehard fans say it is bringing up too many storylines and not resolving any of them. Creatively, "Lost" (8 p.m., ET/PT, Wednesdays on ABC) could be one big tease without any kind of payoff.
"I don't think that will be the case," Steve McPherson, president of ABC primetime entertainment, told reporters recently.
These same fans don't want to put blind faith in "Lost" mastermind J.J. Abrams and his ability to resolve all the mysteries on the island. Ask ABC executives, and they defend the show. But for "Lost," its hit status means that some of the storylines have had to be developed quickly to keep interest alive, ABC says.... Read the full story here.

E! Online - Paris Can't Get "Lost"
Lost found a way to lose American Idol. Now, it's working on Paris Hilton.
In its first matchup against Hilton's fame-enabling Fox reality series, the ABC castaway drama helped strand The Simple Life: Interns in 54th place for the TV week ended Sunday, per Nielsen Media Research.
Simple Life sucked in 8.6 million viewers, well off its premiere, in its new 8:30 Wednesday time slot. By comparison, a bullet-firing, body-dropping Lost hooked 19.5 million (sixth place) over the 8-9 p.m. hour.... Read the full story here. More ratings news at Zap2It.

E! Online - Watch With Kristin: Lost Page?
Let it be known that I would never stoop so low as to dig through someone's trash. The Nashua Telegraph - New meaning to being lost
One of the surprise hits of the season is ABC’s mystery-adventure series “Lost.” When the show’s creator, J.J. Abrams ("Alias") first heard the premise, he didn’t like it at all.
"The idea of a plane crash and people who land on an island, it wasn’t very interesting to me," Abrams says.

The Los Angeles Times - 'Lost' takes an odd path to diversity
When J.J. Abrams turned in an outline for "Lost" last year, Lloyd Braun, then ABC Television Group's chairman, bragged excitedly to a buddy, "This, my friend, is 'ER.'"
Braun was so convinced by the 25-page outline in his hands, a hybrid of "Survivor" and "Cast Away," that he ordered a two-hour, $11-million pilot with no script, just the creators' vision of plane crash survivors on an eerie, not-so-deserted island.
"The outline was, quite honestly, the best piece of television I've ever read," said Braun, who had conceived the show and is now the head of Yahoo Media Group. "I was out of my mind."
Then came the reality check: The two-hour pilot, featuring an ensemble of 14 actors, would have to be finished in 12 weeks — at the end of pilot season, when supposedly all of the hot talent had been scooped up. Which meant that co-creators Abrams ("Alias" and "Felicity") and Damon Lindelof, a writer-producer on "Crossing Jordan," and casting director April Webster would have to pull off a casting feat for the history books....    The Lost-TV Swag Shop is pleased to announce the newest design for our quality products: Lost 815! The design is reminiscent of the interstate highway route markers, and features the word "LOST" at the top and the number "815" at the bottom. 815 is a number which seems to be mentioned a lot on the show (plane number, Kate's vault, Charlie's copier), so it makes sense to produce a shirt dedicated to that number. USA Today - Evil Ethan of 'Lost' booted off the island
On Wednesday's Lost, actor William Mapother lost his job when his evil-to-the-bone character, Ethan Rom, was shot dead by Charlie (Dominic Monaghan). "I told (Dominic), 'You couldn't have asked questions first and shot later?' " Mapother says.

TV Guide Online - Ask Ausiello: LOST DVD Info!
Question: Your column makes it easy to get over the Wednesday hump. You always provide vital information to your readers. My question: Are there any plans for a Lost Season 1 DVD? If so, what is the anticipated release date? I can't wait!!! — Jack S.
Ausiello: It's coming out in early September, and I predict it'll be the biggest TV DVD of the year. Lost cocreator Damon Lindelof tells me that they have an "amazing amount" of extras planned, including "awesome commentaries," deleted scenes between Locke and Hurley, Sawyer and Charlie and Locke and young Walt; footage of the Boeing 747 being cut up in the Mojave Desert and transported via barge to Hawaii; and a look at what went into making the original polar bear sequence. But here's the best part: Lindelof says he and J.J. Abrams are considering making an original mini-movie that "answers one of the questions we've been asked very frequently about the show but have made no attempt to answer so far. It has something to do with why the plane may have crashed." Like me, the exec thinks "the DVD is gonna sell really well with or without [the bonus material], but I wanna be sure the fans are rewarded for their $39.95 or whatever Disney is charging them for a show they've already seen." Only $39.95?!?!?! I'll take two! Read the full story here.

Sci Fi Wire - Lost Looks Ahead
J.J. Abrams, who co-created ABC's hit SF series Lost, told SCI FI Wire that he's already coming up with ideas for a second season. "We obviously know what we're doing for the rest of this year," Abrams said in an interview at ABC's winter press preview in Universal City, Calif. "We definitely have big ideas about what we want to do down the line, past just the second season, and a lot of ideas for the second season already."

The Star-Ledger - They've created a monster : The mysteries on 'Lost' will be solved -- eventually
Damon Lindelof understands your suspicion. Really, he does.
Lindelof is the co-creator of "Lost," ABC's intricately plotted hit thriller about plane crash survivors stranded on a tropical island where nothing is quite as it seems. But he's also a fan of shows like the one he writes, and he's been burned enough times in the past to sympathize with "Lost" viewers who are starting to wonder if he and J.J. Abrams know where the story is going, or if they're just piling mystery on top of mystery to hide the fact that they're making it up as they go along.
"As a member of the community who loved 'The X-Files' for all those years and felt bummed out by the end of it, all I can say is, we're cognitive of trying not to go down the same path," says Lindelof.... Read the full story here.

USA Today - Writers never forget amnesia
ABC's hit show Lost is back Wedneday (8 ET/PT) after two weeks of reruns, and the story picks up with Claire, the pregnant plane-crash survivor, stumbling out of the jungle, unable to remember anything. It's the old amnesia story line.
The memory disorder has been used on TV since Mia Farrow's character, Allison, had amnesia on Peyton Place in the 1960s. Poor Allison was run over and fell into a coma, only to wake, have amnesia and be unable to recognize her own father, who had come back to town after doing time in prison.
"This is a standard soap-opera plot," says Catherine Myers, a doctor at the Memory Disorders Project at Rutgers University-Newark in New Jersey. But this type of memory loss — transient global amnesia — is rare in real life and is usually caused by some kind of psychological trauma.... Read the full story here.

Inside Bay Area - It takes concentration and patience to follow ABC series
In about 24 hours, we're going to get a fresh dose of "Lost," the hot ABC sci-fi series about the strange adventures of plane crash survivors stranded on a mysterious island.
The previews for a new episode — after weeks of reruns — have been deliciously teased by ABC.
Whose body is being carried by three "Lost" regulars in the rolled-up blanket? Could it be Jack, who was in a gun tussle with Ethan?
Were the producers fulfilling their promise that one of the 14 main characters would get killed this season before the May finale?
TV watchers are being separated into two camps: Those who get "Lost" every week, and those who get lost just thinking about it.... Read the full story here.

The Star Online Malaysia - We're hopelessly 'Lost,' and loving every minute of it
So, what exactly is the deal with that toy airplane?
And the giant, unseen monster? And the compass that doesn't show true north? Is there hidden meaning to the lyrics that were scribbled over that mysterious map? Did Walt dream up the polar bear or merely call it? Is Locke the key? Will Driveshaft ever have another hit record?
If the characters on ABC's Lost feel as if they're stranded on a not-quite-deserted island, that's nothing compared with how we viewers feel. The unlikely hit series about a group of airplane crash survivors beached on a mysterious and dangerous island is taking the nation on a roller-coaster ride - and we don't even know where the amusement park is located.... The Indianapolis Star - Presumed dead, pilot on 'Lost' has hopes
Usually, when a TV character is last seen hanging from a high tree branch, at least partly devoured by an unseen and unexplained monster, the actor playing that part can assume that his next paycheck will have to come from elsewhere.
It helps somewhat, though, when your character is on an innovative show like "Lost," and when that show's executive producer is your best friend since childhood.
Several months after an unnamed pilot (Greg Grunberg) crashed a plane full of passengers into an uncharted and mysterious island and launched the "Lost" phenomenon, the actor is hoping his alter ego is primed for an unlikely comeback.... Read the full story here.

On "Lost," the new ABC survivor drama, we know Naveen Andrews' Sayid as a rough-hewn former member of the Iraqi Republican Guard, an electronics expert who fought in the Gulf War. He has been trapped, kidnapped, chased and accused of being a terrorist and a hero.
   Not a Bollywood song-and-dance man.
But in "Bride & Prejudice," a musical version of Jane Austen's classic novel opening Friday, Andrews plays Balraj Bingley, the good friend of Mr. Darcy, the story's romantic hero.... Read the full story here.

TV Guide Online - Lost's Band Plays On
For a band that doesn't really exist, Drive Shaft sure is getting a lot of exposure.
The fictional rock group of Lost castaway Charlie (played by Dominic Monaghan) was featured in a flashback episode in the fall, and the band's single "You All Everybody" was recently heard blasting from Sydney's stereo on Alias, another ABC Wednesday-night show.... Read the full story here.

Albany Times Union - 'Lost' is at top of water cooler talk
There are Deadheads (the Grateful Dead), Dittoheads (Rush Limbaugh) and Cheeseheads (Green Bay Packers). There are Trekkies ("Star Trek") and Claymates (Clay Aiken) and even Fanilows (Barry Manilow).
No, I didn't make the last two up.
   Now there are Lostaways.
These are the fans of "Lost," the freshman ABC drama (Wednesday nights). One of two breakout hits for a resurgent ABC this season - the other is fellow rookie "Desperate Housewives" - the multifaceted drama about 48 plane crash survivors marooned on a mysterious island is arguably the biggest water cooler show of the season.... Toronto Sun - The 'Lost' episodes: A show-by-show guide to 'Lost'
Forget about Desperate Housewives: In our opinion, Lost is the new show to watch.
For those of you who have been trapped on an island somewhere, Lost is about, well, people trapped on an island somewhere. It's a high-concept series that follows the adventures of a band of plane-crash survivors, with intricate flashbacks into their troubled pasts. And there's definitely something weird afoot on the island, where an unseen monster makes its presence felt from time to time.
The show manages to juggle its huge cast -- 14 or so regulars, with lots of guest stars -- while deepening the mystery with each episode. Theories abound: Where are they, really? How could they have survived the crash? Why are dead people and polar bears suddenly appearing on the island? And why isn't the fat guy losing any weight?
Now, with the show in repeats until Feb. 9, we figure it's the perfect time to play catchup. Consider this a sort of Coles Notes to Lost. We give a rundown of every episode and tell you which theory we're leaning toward in each.... Read the full story here.

Orlando Sentinel - 'Lost' is still discovering itself
On a day that Desperate Housewives inspires a party and dominates Tinseltown chats, ABC's other big new hit still has people talking. Such is the power of Lost, the plane-crash drama about perplexed passengers on a remote island.
Does ABC know the central mystery of that island?
"We have a good sense of where it's going," says Steve McPherson, president of ABC's prime-time entertainment.... Read the full story here.

The Daily Telegraph - Island of lost souls
AFTER spending six years as the hypersensitive Charlie Salinger on Party Of Five, Matthew Fox can safely say he knows what women want.
But more importantly, he knows what he wants and the 38-year-old has finally found it in Lost, a series that sees him among 48 plane crash survivors stranded on a tropical island.
In the US, the show trails only Desperate Housewives as the highest-rating new show and has reeled viewers in by the truckload with melodramatic twists, intentional character misrepresentation and the way in which it provides an answer to one question only to pose seventeen others.
It's a far cry from Fox's days on Party Of Five, a series so filled with trauma, it had the potential to leave one feeling rather depressed.... Read the full story here.
