Contra Costa Times - Catch up with 'Lost'
What's in that blasted hatch? Just who, exactly, are the "Others"? Why is this island so dog-gone creepy? On "Lost," ABC's Emmy-winning thriller about a group of beleaguered plane-crash survivors, the questions just keep coming. The series is so crammed with mind-blowing mysteries and cryptic clues that even loyal devotees sometimes struggle to keep their heads above water. And if you're a curious newcomer, you might as well be stranded on a deserted isle bereft of compass or map. With that in mind, we offer this primer, just in time for tonight's launch of the show's sophomore season. Containing a raft of plotline info, facts and figures, we hope it will help fanatics get back up to speed while giving rookies a chance to get with the program. Either way, you won't want to get "Lost" without it.... Read the full story here. (5:44 PM)
The Dallas Morning News - 'Lost' keeps formula for success
What's in the hatch? Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof has spent a lot of time pondering the answer because it's the kind of question the producers of last season's breakout drama constantly face. And the challenge is not just in deciding how much of the mystery to give away, but also to what purpose. "As we began to design the show, the first thing we inevitably realized is there should be no big secret," Mr. Lindelof says. "It had to have rules, but the idea that you come to a scene where we explain the fundamental nature of everything that has happened would be unsatisfying.... Read the full story here. (5:43 PM)
USA Today - Will Emmy wins ignite 'Lost'?
Maybe the hatch contains shelf space for an Emmy. The contents of the mysterious hatch and other puzzles are back for viewers to ponder when ABC's Lost returns Wedensday (recap special, 8 ET/PT, followed by second season premiere at 9). But a new, non-life-threatening question has arisen: Will Sunday's Emmy win for best dramatic series — or other developments, such as a hot-selling DVD — boost ratings for last season's No. 14 show? The Emmy could help the drama, which follows the lives of plane crash survivors on a spooky island, but it's hard to gauge, ABC entertainment chief Steve McPherson says. Lost co-creator J.J. Abrams also won an Emmy for directing the two-hour pilot.... Read the full story here. (5:41 PM)

Newsday - Will 'Lost' keep going in right direction?
Can "Lost" find its way to avoiding TV's dread sophomore slump? The vast wasteland of the tube's past is littered with flashes that didn't pan out post-first-season success, "Twin Peaks" being preeminent among them. David Lynch's 1990 ABC sensation failed to pay off its central mystery - Who killed Laura Palmer? - soon enough for some fans, or clearly enough for others, when it finally got around to digging deeper. Simply setting up a mesmerizing whodunit seemed to be the point for moviemaker Lynch, who may have been caught flatfooted when his unlikely pilot got picked up and turned into a mini-hit. J.J. Abrams should know better. The co-creator of "Lost" as well as its production mastermind (winning an Emmy Sunday for directing the pilot), he's been down the continuing-saga road before. Abrams previously crafted four seasons of The WB college chronicle "Felicity" and another four of ABC's "Alias," which starts its fifth season a week from Thursday. He and "Lost" co-creator Damon Lindelof (who accepted the series' best-drama Emmy Sunday night) also started laying the groundwork for the second season before the first finished up.... MSNBC - It’s time to get 'Lost' again
Say it with me, "Lost" fans: What do we want? ANSWERS! When do we want them? NOW! "Desperate Housewives" and "CSI" earn better ratings every single week. "The Apprentice" and "American Idol" probably get more press. But if actual viewer interest could somehow be dumped onto a scale and measured, no fall premiere is more anticipated than that of "Lost," which returns Sept. 21 on ABC. "Lost" started off with a bang — a crash, really — and the show made it clear from the start that this was no ordinary plane crash. The pilot, who admitted he'd flown the plane well off course, was quickly chomped on by a mysterious island monster. An armed federal marshal turns out to have been escorting a dangerous prisoner, Kate, whose slight appearance belies her criminal past. Two island leaders developed: one, Jack, a doctor; another, Locke, a military type who hides a secret of his own — before the crash, he was paralyzed, now he's miraculously cured.... The Mercury News - Finding answers
Over the past four months, many fans of ABC's "Lost" have been very unhappy campers. The complex, critically acclaimed series about a group of airline passengers stranded on a very, very weird tropical island pulled off one of the biggest surprises of last season by becoming a hit show with an audience of 16 million (episodes in May averaged nearly 19 million) and snagging 12 Emmy nominations. It won six of the awards, including Best Drama Series. Its finale in May was the single most compelling episode on network TV last season and drew 20.2 million viewers -- even though it went head-to-head against the final hours of "American Idol." So what's the problem? Well, many of the devoted felt that too many questions went unanswered in the finale. These viewers made their feelings known with some vehemence on various Web sites.... The Arizona Republic - 'Lost' producers reveal some juicy secrets
No one said it would be easy to be a "Lost" fan or a "Lost" producer. This is a TV show that skips simple plans and simplistic dialogue. As the second season nears, producers offer only a few promises. There will be a quick trip into the hatch. In the season-opener, characters will learn what's hidden underground.... ABC News - ABC's 'Lost' Returns for Second Season
After guardedly making his way through a darkened tunnel, Dr. Jack Sheppard found himself bewildered and facing a harrowing decision. His trust and character are tested again in ABC's "Lost," which won the best drama series Emmy on Sunday and returns for its highly anticipated second season on Wednesday. "Anytime people are in very extreme circumstances, dealing with life and death and dealing with survival I think we can find truth in those moments," said Matthew Fox, who plays the reluctant leader of a group of plane crash survivors stranded on a mysterious island. "Lost" fans, who have patiently waited all summer for answers following last season's two-hour finale, will finally find out what's beyond the metal hatch that leads deep into the earth.... National Post - Lost actor proud of show for putting Asian characters front and centre
Daniel Dae Kim, a key character on ABC's Emmy-winning drama Lost, is delighted to be working on one of the most acclaimed shows on television. But it's not just because of the accolades and awards that are coming Lost's way, most notably the best drama Emmy it picked up on Sunday night as it beat out equally revered fare like Six Feet Under and 24. Kim is doubly grateful because the show is one of the few on television with Asian characters in integral roles - a welcome development that had Kim in Toronto this summer to promote the castaway drama weeks before its second season premiere Wednesday on ABC and CTV.... New York Times - The Laws of the Jungle
On "Lost," one of last season's most successful series, some four dozen plane crash survivors confronted a Pacific island infused with mystery. A monster devoured a pilot. A polar bear rampaged through the jungle. An enigmatic paraplegic could walk again. The first season ended last May with dual cliffhangers: two characters peered down a hatch they had found, only to be greeted by the spooky darkness of an unending vertical shaft, while another group of characters, attempting an escape by raft, were thwarted by scary strangers who sailed off with a child. But the biggest puzzle the producers of "Lost" face as they enter their second season this Wednesday may well be how to avoid alienating the audience that has made it one of ABC's first water-cooler hit dramas in more than a decade.... ...That fear of getting too wrapped up in the intricacies of the show's mythology keeps Mr. Cuse from trolling the numerous Web sites that fans have constructed to revere, obsess over, debate and criticize the show, like Lost-TV (www.lost-tv.com). "The genre aspects of the show are cool, and we have fun doing it," Mr. Cuse said. "But I am much more engaged by the people on the show, and I think that is fundamentally what we try to do.... ABC News - Rodriguez 'Lost' on Details of Return
Actress Michelle Rodriguez is returning to ABC's hit castaway drama "Lost," but even she doesn't know what the future holds for her character. In a flashback scene on the season finale, Rodriguez played Ana-Lucia Cortez, a passenger on doomed Oceanic flight No. 815, who flirted with Jack, played by Matthew Fox, at an airport bar in Sydney, Australia. "I don't know what the writers have in store for me," Rodriguez said. "That's why I like it so much. Maybe I don't want to know.... Read the full story here. (2:26 AM)

Newsweek - Time to Get 'Lost'
In the weeks leading up to the Sept. 21 season premiere of "Lost," ABC's Emmy-nominated drama series about a group of plane-crash survivors marooned on a very peculiar island, the network has gone to great lengths to keep the episode shrouded in secrecy. Cast members are forbidden to discuss with anyone what they know. Writers on the show dodge questions about which characters will live, who'll die and What It All Means. And in the boldest gesture of all, the network sent no preview DVDs to the media—a risky move for a show that's still in its infancy and eager to attract even more watchers. ("Lost" averaged 16 million per episode in its first season.) The message from the network has been clear: no matter who you are, you'll just have to wait. No exceptions.... Read the full story here. Impressed about the tragedy from New Orleans and Louisiana, the "Lost" cast gathered together at a charity event organized by series star Harold Perrineau, to raise money for Hurricane Katrina victims. The event, who took place in Waikiki, raised $20,250. Matthew Fox, who plays hunky surgeon Jack Sheppard in the show, says, "This is how we're trying to help. The National Ledger - Lost Actor Naveen Andrews Goes Over to the Dark Side
"Lost" regular Naveen Andrews went to the dark side this hiatus -- playing a malicious, abusive husband in the upcoming indie film "Provoked" -- and he's glad to be back. "I've always thought there was something slightly psychotic about me anyway, so it was good to sort of get the chance to release that in a positive way," says Andrews. "The film is based on a true story about Kiranjit, the lady who ended up burning her husband after being abused by him throughout the marriage. She was jailed for life and was released after two years inside because she was provoked. She put up with it (the abuse) for almost 10 years." He says the beleaguered housewife finally snapped after "an act of violence that was particularly savage, that also involved rape. It was just one step too far, and she took action.... USA Today - 'Lost' in the face of death
The stakes are rising. No doubt about it. The Others are out there, and they mean harm: They blew up the escape raft and kidnapped young Walt. The French-speaking "mad"-moiselle took Claire's baby for a few heart-stopping hours. And that deafening, unseen monster is still rustling in the trees. On the outskirts of Honolulu in a warehouse converted into what looks like a cheesy Hawaiian-themed restaurant with fake caves, lit tiki torches, wood-chip floors and plastic tropical plants, some of the stars of the hit ABC series Lost have assembled to shoot a scene for next week's second-season premiere (Sept. 21, 9 p.m. ET/PT). It promises to pick up the many threads left hanging by last season's two-hour finale, which repeats tonight at 9.... Read the full story here. (3:49 PM)

Honolulu Star-Bulletin - Hollywood ending
It was a picture-postcard day, three years ago at Ehukai Beach, where the film "Blue Crush" was being filmed. A still photographer started to shoot stars Kate Bosworth and Sanoe Lake walking down the beach carrying surfboards. But Michelle Rodriguez, the third member of the star triumvirate, wasn't in the shot, so a producer asked the photographer not to shoot yet. "It might upset" Rodriguez, the producer said. "Someone said that?" Rodriguez, 27, asks. "That's pretty nuts, but I guess I had an attitude. Well, sorry about that." Rodriguez is back living on the North Shore while filming ABC's hit series "Lost." Rodriguez plays Ana-Lucia, who was introduced to viewers at the end of the first season. She returns this year as permanent member of the cast and will be featured in episodes three and four of the new season.... Read the full story here. (1:05 AM)

Four shows -- the returning hit dramas "Lost" and "Desperate Housewives" and comedies "George Lopez" and "Freddie" -- will be dubbed into Spanish, as will some specials and showings of theatrical movies. The remainder of ABC's shows will be close-captioned in Spanish. "We wanted to move beyond toe-dipping and really dive in," says Stephen McPherson, president of ABC Entertainment. USA Today - DVDs spin new TV habits
Jeff Slankard is getting antsy. Season 1 of Lost arrives on DVD Tuesday, and he has exactly 15 days to watch it all before Season 2 makes its debut on ABC Sept. 21. "I got hooked on Lost when it started, but I missed some of the episodes," says Slankard, 52, a wine buyer from Oceanside, Calif. "I'm going to grab Season 1 as soon as it comes out and catch up on everything I missed before Season 2." For the next two weeks, Slankard won't be watching much broadcast and cable TV. And it's likely to be happening more often, as more DVD titles of hit series come out in time for viewers to catch up on their favorite shows in anticipation of the new fall season....
